Wise Words… and Wisdom
During times when I am grieving or experiencing turmoil or pain in my life, I often look to words of wise masters who lived before me. Rumi is one of those… whose words I find to be simple yet magnificent in their truth. I find Rumi’s words in his poem, The Guest House, to be full of deep wisdom. And I take these words to heart whenever I am faced with challenge or an unwanted situation… be it physical, mental, emotional, energetic, or spiritual.
Life throws challenges our way, and sometimes we must bear discomfort and pain. What can we learn from the situations that cause us to shift uncomfortably or that weigh us down or cause us to cry out…. perhaps a stronger, wiser, more resilient version of our self presents to the world as a result of the “visitor”.
In these tumultuous times in the world, I find Rumi’s poem The Guest House to be thought provoking and inspiring… prompting me to keep an open heart and mind… even through the challenges and the unknown and the often dark situations presenting in society. Consider Rumi’s words…
The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
They may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing
and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
